Alternative Methods
Introduction

This learning programme is focused on parasitological diagnosis. In this chapter, we would like to provide an overview of alternative methods for the diagnosis of parasitic diseases. Besides the indirect detection of an infection via the induced immune response (antibody detection in the serum or cerebrospinal fluid, skin tests to detect hypersensitivity reactions), the detection of parasitic antigens or nucleic acids has made much progress in the last decade.
Each diagnostic method has its strengths and weaknesses.
